Aldactone
spironolactone
Trade names: Aldactone, Speractin
Aldactone is a potassium sparing diuretic. This is significant because unlike Lasix, Aldactone can reduce water retention without the associated muscle flatness that occurs with regular diuretics. Warning: For this reason it is very important that athletes using Aldactone should not take any addition Potassium as this would cause a life threatening increase in the serum Potassium level.
Aldactone is a relatively mild diuretic as is most Potassium sparing diuretics, but it also has some other characteristics that make this compound interesting. Notable is that Aldactone is an anti-androgen and is used by women to reduce virilization symptoms during and after steroid use. For this purpose the dosage is usually 50mgs per day in divided doses for 10-14 days. In men, this can cause problems because it can accelerate estrogen related side effects like gynecomastia.
Dosage
In bodybuilders, Aldactone is use during the last few day of competition preparation with stunning results. Aldactone unlike Lasix does not cause a sudden drop in water so the effects are realised at a slower pace, with this in mind Aldactone is usually take over 5 or 6 days at a dosage 50-100mgs per day and is combined with high water intake up to the last day or two to aid the process of dropping water.
Side effects
